The iconic MTV News closes after 36 and a half years, after Paramount's restructuring
This is the end of an era. After 36 and a half years, the Paramount film studio ordered the closure of MTV News, the icon of music-related and famous news that marked two generations.
This measure follows similar ones, such as BuzzFeed that closed BuzzFeed News and Vice Media that decreased its workforce.
Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks, MTV and Showtime, informed the team that the parent company feels "wider economic counterwind pressure like many of our peers", despite the success in streaming. "As a result, we made the very difficult but necessary decision to reduce our domestic team by approximately 25%," McCarthy wrote.
Despite the increase in visits to the MTV News website, which went from 5.6 million visits in March 2022 to 6 million in March 2023, it was not enough for Paramount to want to keep the news site on the air.
